SAN FRANCISCO -Thousands of low-and fixed-income gas and electric customers who are eligible for the California Alternate Rates for Energy (CARE) Program can now enroll faster and receive a 20 percent discount on their monthly energy bill, thanks to a new online enrollment tool announced by Pacific Gas and Electric Company.
Qualifying customers can submit their application online and be enrolled in the CARE Program within 2 business days. The discount will appear on their bill after a full billing cycle. On average, CARE saves households $42 per month on their gas and electric bill.
"Customers now have access to the internet via home, libraries, educational institutions and community assistance organizations," said Linda Fontes, PG&E's CARE Program supervisor. "Because of the availability of technology, we have created online enrollment for the convenience of our customers."
Since the program's inception in 1989, PG&E has saved customers more than $2.5 billion on their energy bills. Currently there are 1,113,005 customers throughout PG&E's service area enrolled in CARE, which represents 73% of the total who are estimated to be eligible. There are still more than 400,000 households in northern and central California who are financially eligible for CARE, but not yet enrolled.
Every year, the CPUC adjusts the maximum qualifying income levels to reflect changes in the federal poverty guidelines.
