Pacific Gas and Electric Company Named Overall Leader in Corporate Social Responsibility Practices Utility Wins a Total of Four CSR Awards from PR News

SAN FRANCISCO - Pacific Gas and Electric Company's (PG&E's) leading corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices received several awards from PR News during their annual CSR awards ceremony held this Wednesday in Washington D.C. The utility was named the Overall Leader in CSR Practices for a corporation with between 1,000 and 25,000 employees. In addition to the overall leader award, PG&E received honorable mention awards in the Diversity Communications, Employee Relations and CSR Pioneer of the Year: Communicator categories.
"PG&E's deep commitment to corporate social responsibility is demonstrated in the values we hold as a company and the innovative campaigns we launch to engage our customers and employees in key initiatives," said Steven Kline, vice president of corporate environmental and federal affairs for PG&E. "These awards recognize our efforts to fully integrate corporate social responsibility into the company through programs that build off our long-standing dedication to protect the environment, increase energy efficiency, celebrate diversity and partner with the communities we serve."
A strong commitment to protect the environment is a core value of PG&E that is shared by employees. Over the past year, PG&E's environmental efforts have resulted in adding more than 1,000 megawatts of new renewable energy resources under contract to the utility's power mix, distributing one million free compact fluorescent lamps to customers and making the largest purchase of greenhouse gas emission reductions in California through our first-of-its kind ClimateSmart™ program, a voluntary initiative that allows our customers to make their energy use "climate neutral."
The company's values help guide employees' everyday interactions with customers and provide the critical foundation for effective CSR programs. PG&E's Environmental Speaker Series was a finalist in the Employee Relations category. The company invited vibrant, thought-provoking environmental experts to speak to employees and reinforce employee awareness of PG&E's environmental commitment and initiatives.
PG&E fosters a diverse workforce and strives to support the diverse communities the company serves. PG&E's "Verde Que Te Quiero Verde" campaign was a finalist in the Diversity Communications category. This environmental education program reached out to the Bay Area's Hispanic community to celebrate diversity and encourage environmental sustainability.
For over 30 years, PG&E has offered a wide variety of energy efficiency programs designed to encourage customers to use less energy and save money. Recently, high tech energy efficiency has become an area of focus, especially for customers with data centers that use a significant amount of electricity. Mark Bramfitt, principal program manager for customer energy management at PG&E, was a finalist in the CSR Pioneer of the Year: Communicator category for pioneering the creation of first-of-their-kind financial incentive programs that encourage high tech companies to use less energy, particularly within data centers. Mark has also led the formation of a national coalition of utilities to discuss and coordinate energy efficiency programs for the high tech sector.
In addition to these CSR awards, PG&E Corporation was recently recognized by Corporate Responsibility Officer magazine in their annual ranking of the 100 Best Corporate Citizens list. Overall, the company ranked 10th on this year's list and ranked first out of 1,000 companies in the magazine's Governance category. PG&E also provided over $18 million dollars in charitable contributions in 2007, the largest charitable commitment in the company's history.
