PG&E and Its Employees Help Food Banks
Continuing its long-standing commitment to actively support the communities it serves, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) announced last week a new effort to help support local food banks. The utility will match employee donations, up to $100, to any of the 41 food banks of their choice within the PG&E service area, for a total of $100,000 system-wide. The announcement was made at the 2008 Mielke Awards ceremony, which recognizes employees for their outstanding community service.

PG&E Adds More Renewable Wind Energy to Its Power Mix
Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) announced today it has entered into a long-term agreement with Hatchet Ridge Wind, LLC, a subsidiary of Babcock & Brown, to purchase up to 103 megawatts (MW) of renewable wind energy. The project will generate up to 303 gigawatt-hours of renewable energy annually. This would be equivalent to the amount of energy needed to serve nearly 44,000 residential homes on an annual basis.

Pacific Gas and Electric Company Interconnects 25,000th Net Metered Solar Customer in Northern and Central California
Pacific Gas and Electric Company today celebrated the 25,000th net metered solar interconnection in its northern and central California service area, representing almost half of the nation’s customer-owned solar. Net energy metering allows eligible renewable customers to offset the cost of their electric usage with energy they export to the power grid. The 25,000th PG&E net metered solar customer, David Bower, is also part of the California Solar Initiative (CSI) program. To encourage customer investment in solar, PG&E provides rebate incentives that will total $4,500 for a system that supplies 2.4 kilowatts (kW) of power to Bower’s home.

PG&E Encourages Customers to Take Advantage of Programs to Reduce Energy Usage
Pacific Gas and Electric Company advised customers that electricity prices will be increasing effective today, October 1, due to higher power purchase costs incurred in 2008. Below normal seasonal rainfall has resulted in drought conditions that reduced the amount of hydroelectric power available for PG&E to provide customers. This and higher natural gas prices are the two main factors leading to higher electricity prices. To reduce the rate impact to customers, PG&E is proposing to collect these increased costs during the next 15 months.
