Hunters Point Power Plant Closure and Cleanup
For 75 years, the Hunters Point Power Plant provided electricity to light and heat San Francisco homes and businesses. In 1998, PG&E signed an agreement with the City and County of San Francisco pledging to shut down the plant as soon as regulators could determine that the plant was no longer needed to supply reliable electrical service to San Francisco. In 2006, the regulators made that determination and PG&E promptly closed the plant.
Today, the Hunters Point Power Plant is gone and PG&E is cleaning up the property in accordance with a plan approved by state regulators with input from the community. PG&E will clean up the site to a residential standard.
The cleanup project is being overseen by the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), the City and County of San Francisco, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and the Bay Conservation and Development Commission.
PG&E is committed to working with the community throughout the cleanup process. A local jobs program has been in place during the plant dismantlement and will continue during the cleanup. The same is true of our community outreach program. We are committed to an ongoing and open dialogue with the community for all aspects of the project.
We continually update this site as we have new information to share, so please check back frequently.
