Manufactured Gas Plants
Former Tracy Manufactured Gas Plant

As part of a voluntary program under the oversight of the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), PG&E has completed environmental remediation at the site of a former manufactured gas plant (MGP) in Tracy, California. The MGP was located at 502 E. Grant Line Road, the location of PG&E's Tracy Service Center.
Investigations began in 2007 to determine the extent of potential impacts from former gas plant operations and any remediation that would be necessary. Based on results of investigations and with the approval of DTSC, more than 5,000 cubic yards of soil and asphalt were removed and disposed of at an off-site landfill in late 2011/early 2012. Excavated areas were backfilled with clean soil and areas were repaved.
During project excavation activities, impacts to groundwater were found in the south and northwest areas of the property. Plans to address these impacts are under development and PG&E will continue to monitor groundwater at the site.
PG&E will continue to inform the community of any further investigation or site work through work notices and other outreach activities, as appropriate.
The former Tracy MGP operated from 1927 to 1930. PG&E acquired the plant in 1930 and shut it down later that year when natural gas became available. PG&E has used the property for service center operations since 1958.
