Manufactured Gas Plants
Former Beach Street Manufactured Gas Plant – San Francisco
The former Beach Street manufactured gas plant operated near the intersection of Beach and Powell Streets in the Fisherman’s Wharf area of San Francisco. PG&E acquired and operated this historic gas plant from 1905 to 1930, when it was closed down and dismantled. PG&E later sold the property and it was redeveloped for commercial use. A hotel currently occupies portions of the historic site.
Starting in 2010, PG&E is conducting a voluntary program under the oversight of the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) to sample for residual materials that may be present at the site of the former Beach Street manufactured gas plant. If the DTSC determines that remediation activities are necessary, we’ll work closely with that agency, residents and City health and environmental departments to design the most effective remediation program for the site.
PG&E is conducting similar work at the sites of two other former manufactured gas plant locations in the Marina District of San Francisco, near the area north of Bay Street and Buchanan Street and near the area west of Fillmore Street and Bay Street.
