Utility Worker

Responsibilities: A utility worker assists journey-level gas and electric department employees with duties such as: digging trenches (using shovels, picks or pneumatic tools); raising and lowering tools and equipment up to 100 pounds utilizing ropes, cables, rollers, slings and blocks; transporting vehicles and equipment; and flagging traffic. Travel within PG&E’s service area may be required. The essential functions of all positions are subject to change based on operating necessity.

Requirements:


  • 18 years of age upon employment
  • A valid California Class C driver's license
  • Successful completion of pre-employment tests: a qualifying score on the pre-employment Physical Test Battery (PTB) exam is required
  • Successful passage of drug screen and background check
  • Ability to work at heights

Desired:

  • Construction experience
  • Customer focus, safety consciousness, team orientation and high work standards
  • Eighth- to tenth-grade level math and English literacy

Wages: Effective January 1, 2008, the starting wage is $826.40 per week.

Apprentice Lineworker

Responsibilities: An apprentice lineworker performs construction and maintenance of overhead and underground electrical transmission and distribution lines under the guidance of a journey-level employee. Lineworkers are critical to ensuring PG&E's customers have a safe and reliable source of electricity. Vital skills of a qualified lineworker include constructing and maintaining equipment, inspecting and testing power lines and other electric devices, laying underground cables and climbing poles or using truck-mounted buckets to reach overhead equipment. The essential functions of all positions are subject to change based on operating necessity.

Requirements:


  • 18 years of age upon employment
  • A valid California Class C driver's license
  • Successful completion of pre-employment test: a qualifying score on the preemployment Physical Test Battery (PTB) exam and on the Arithmetic Computation Test* (ACT) exam. Successful completion of the Assessment for Lineworker Progression (ALP) test
  • Successful passage of drug screen and background check
  • Ability to work at heights

Desired:

  • Eighth- to tenth-grade level math and English literacy

Wages: Effective January 1, 2008, the starting wage is $1,150.80 per week.

*During 2008, the ACT will be superseded by the Applied Math Test for Utility Jobs.

Apprentice Electrical Technician

Responsibilities: An electrical technician performs installation, field testing and maintenance of the following: protective relay equipment, relay carriers, supervisory equipment, station apparatus, instruments, remote and local control devices and associated wiring. The essential functions of all positions are subject to change based on operating necessity.


Requirements:

  • 18 years of age upon employment
  • A valid California Class C driver's license
  • Successful completion of pre-employment test: A qualifying score on the pre-employment Physical Test Battery (PTB) exam and the Apprentice Electrical Technician Test
  • Successful passage of drug screen and background check

Desired:

  • Twelfth-grade level math and English literacy

Wages: Effective January 1, 2008, wages start at $1,334.80 per week.

Apprentice Instrument Technician

Responsibilities: An apprentice instrument technician troubleshoots, repairs, maintains, replaces and installs process control equipment to produce quality products and ensure environmental protection, safety and cost-effective operations. Employees in these positions work with pneumatic, mechanical, electronic and computer-based process control equipment. The essential functions of all positions are subject to change based on operating necessity.


Requirements:

  • 18 years of age upon employment
  • A valid California Class C driver's license
  • Successful completion of pre-employment test: a qualifying score on the pre-employment Physical Test Battery (PTB) exam and the Apprentice Electrical Technician Test
  • Successful passage of drug screen and background check

Desired:

  • Twelfth-grade level math and English literacy

Wages: Effective January 1, 2008, the starting wage is $1,412.80 per week.

Apprentice Welder

Responsibilities: A welder performs electric and gas welding, as well as installs, repairs, maintains, fabricates and upgrades gas transmission pipelines and distribution piping. Welders must be able to work safely and with a minimum amount of supervision. Significant travel is required. Overtime may be required.


Requirements:

  • 18 years of age upon employment
  • A valid California Class C driver's license
  • Successful passage of drug screen and background check
  • A minimum of two years of related experience or related formal training
  • Successful completion of pre-employment tests: a qualifying score on the pre-employment Physical Test Battery (PTB) exam and Arithmetic Computation Test (ACT)* test

Wages: Effective January 1, 2008, the starting wage is $1,150.80 per week.

Equipment/Field Mechanic

Responsibilities: The equipment/field mechanic would be required to maintain all systems on the piece of equipment such as engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical and hydraulic, and others. Employees in these positions also work on air brake systems, hydraulic systems and engine rebuilding/diagnostics, and follow OSHA boom and California BIT terminal inspection requirements. Experience with computer systems, and able to document work. Must be knowledgeable on hazardous waste disposal.

  • A valid California Class C driver's license
  • Successful passage of drug screen and background check
  • A minimum of two years of related experience or related formal training
  • Successful completion of pre-employment tests: a qualifying score on the preemployment Physical Test Battery (PTB) exam and Arithmetic Computation Test (ACT)* test

Wages: Effective January 1, 2008, the starting wage is $1,505.60 per week.
